No fame, no fanfare
Fallen, not forgotten
Long training, long trip
Long stay on The Somme.

Three years a husband and father
Three months training ‘a soldier to be’
Three days on a trip to the front
Three hours in a trench ‘just a waiting’.

A lifetime, an eternity
A moment, a second
The time above the parapet.
Long stay on The Somme.

A family remembers
Though none ever met him.
A gene ever diluting
A determination ever growing

No more being fodder
Whilst politicians dodder.
Paddy’s war was the last
And that insanities over.
